South Carolina State quarterback Eric Phoenix was named the BOXTOROW National HBCU Player of the Week.

Against Delaware State, the graduate quarterback completed 18-of-21 passes for 341 yards and four touchdowns and added 30 yards rushing and another touchdown on four carries, as the Bulldogs decimated the Hornets 69-35.

Phoenix’s 1,791 passing yards is the most prolific mark in the MEAC and good for 18th in FCS. His 14 passing touchdowns is 14th in the country and also the second most in the MEAC, only trailing North Carolina Central’s Walker Harris’ 15. His 341 yards was the third time on the season he had eclipsed the 300-yard plateau.

Prior to coming to Orangeburg, Phoenix spent a season at Murray State. The previous 3 years he was at Benedict, where he appeared in 28 games, completing 343-of-540 passes for 4,400 yards, 32 touchdowns and 18 interceptions and helping the Tigers hoist the SIAC Championship in 2022.
